Policies and Expectations
Grading policy:
The grade in this class will be based on our units with a small percentage dedicated to the 6 C's. All assignments are based on a 0-4 point scale with slight variations for larger assessments. All assessments can be retaken for a better grade, however, grades can also be lowered if that is the score that is earned on a retake. Assignments may be turned in late for no penalty. For a regular college preparatory course, the overall grade for the course will be determined as follows:
A = 81 – 100% B = 62 – 80% C = 37 – 61% D = 14 – 36% F = 13% and below
For an AP course, to reflect the scoring on the AP exam, the overall grade for the course will be determined as follows:
A = 70 – 100% B = 55 – 69% C = 35 – 54% D = 15 – 34% F = 14% and below
Behavior:
I am here to help you with your work. My responsibilities include encouraging you and helping you in your responsibilities here. If for any reason I fail to live up to my responsibilities, you must let me know so that I can best help you! Your responsibilities include arriving on time and putting your best effort into all of your work.
In order to help us meet these responsibilities, the behavioral expectations for the class are as follows:
1. We will allow the teacher to teach and students to learn.
2. We will maintain a safe environment within the classroom.
3. We will be in our seats and prepared to work by the time the bell rings everyday.
School policies will also be followed to ensure your success and the success of others.
Homework:
You may have homework if work given in class is not completed within the period. The assignments will be checked at the beginning of the class period on the date due. All homework must be hand-written. If you have an excused absence you have as many days as you were legally absent to make up the work
missed.
Attendance/Tardiness:
Attendance is essential in order to succeed in this class. You are responsible for all work if you are absent. Also, please let me know in advance of any absences on exam days or extended absences. Students may not make work missed during an unexcused absence. Unexcused absences will lead to a loss of credit, assignment points or a failing grade. Each student is expected to be in their seat working on the Do Now when the tardy bell rings. Tardiness disrupts the class, the learning process, and is disrespectful to the teacher and the other students. If you are accidentally marked absent, I must be informed that same week or it cannot be changed.
SAFETY FIRST!
Because this is a Lab Science, you will be required to follow class safety directions at all times. There are too many dangerous
chemicals and expensive equipment not to take every precaution possible. If you choose to not follow these precautions you will sit out the lab and have
no opportunity for make-up. Depending on the severity of the infraction you may also be suspended. Students who damage science equipment through neglect may be asked to reimburse the department for the cost of repairing or replacing that equipment.
Materials:
Every student is strongly recommended to have a 100 page notebook and a scientific calculator (in Chemistry) for this class. The notebook will be periodically evaluated for completeness and organization. There is a possibility that students may be able to use their notebook on a test or quiz. The better organized and complete it is, the more beneficial it will be. Students should bring this notebook, as well as basic writing materials (pen, pencil, paper, calculator, etc…) to class every day.
